IranWA Engagement with Australian Government and Humanitarian Organisations

As part of IranWA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its connection with decision-making bodies and advocate for the rights of the Iranian community in Australia, representatives of the organisation have participated in several key meetings with senior government officials and humanitarian organisations These engagements provided valuable opportunities to directly communicate the concerns, issues, and requests of the Iranian Australian community.

1. Meeting with Federal Ministers of Australia

At the invitation of The Hon Tony Burke MP (Minister for Home Affairs, Immigration, Citizenship and the Arts) and The Hon Dr Anne Aly MP (Minister for Small Business, International Development and Multicultural Affairs), a meeting was held with the participation of more than 30 representatives from Iranian associations and community groups across various Australian states.

Only a small number of participants had the opportunity to speak during this meeting, and a representative from IranWA successfully used the limited time available to clearly emphasise the importance of distinguishing between the people of Iran and the Islamic Republic regime. This point was delivered as a key message, and it was requested that the Australian Government reflect this distinction explicitly in its policymaking, official statements, and international dealings.

The ministers listened attentively to these points and affirmed that the Government is aware of this distinction. They also stated that this meeting would be the beginning of an ongoing conversation with the Iranian community and expressed their interest in continuing engagement with active Iranian organisations.

2. Meeting with the Department of Home Affairs

Members of the IranWA board participated in a meeting with officials from the Department of Home Affairs in Western Australia. This meeting included Ally Paolino (Regional Director WA) and several senior leaders from the department.

During the session, IranWA representatives shared concerns and suggestions regarding social, security, and immigration support for the Iranian community. They also emphasised the importance of establishing a direct and ongoing communication pathway between the government and Iranian community organisations.

The department officials responded positively to the proposals and expressed their support for continued engagement on a regular basis.

3. Initial engagement with Australian Red Cross

In recent weeks, initial contact was made with the Australian Red Cross. In written communication, IranWA requested that in all humanitarian actions related to Iran, a clear distinction be maintained between the people of Iran and the Islamic Republic regime.

This message was received with understanding and full respect by the organisation. As a result, IranWA has been invited to attend an in-person meeting with the President of the Australian Red Cross. The purpose of this meeting will be to explore potential areas of collaboration in humanitarian and support-related efforts connected to the Iranian community.

4. Ongoing engagement with the Australian Federal Police

A steady relationship has been maintained with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) over recent months. Through this channel, a number of concerns and issues raised by the Iranian community have been communicated directly. This engagement has intensified in recent days and has helped provide clearer visibility on the current challenges faced by Iranian Australians.

The AFP has welcomed this communication and acknowledged the importance of maintaining direct dialogue with community organisations and representatives. The continuation of this engagement can foster greater mutual understanding, build trust, and enable more effective support in both security and social contexts.

IranWA remains committed to representing the Iranian Australian community with integrity, clarity, and courage. These engagements are just the beginning of a deeper conversation with Australian institutions, and we will continue to advocate for the needs, voices, and rights of our people.
