About the Event
Khaaym Khani, also known as Khayyam Khani, is a traditional form of folk music from the southern Iranian port city of Bushehr. This musical tradition involves the singing of the quatrains (Rubaiyat) of the famous Persian poet Omar Khayyam, accompanied by traditional southern Iranian instruments like the Ney Jofti (double reed flute) and Ney Hambon (a type of bagpipe).
Omar Khayyam, a prominent 11th-century poet, mathematician, and philosopher, is celebrated for his poetic works that reflect on themes such as the impermanence of life and the critique of religious hypocrisy. Despite Khayyam never having visited Bushehr, his poetry has a special place in the cultural life of the city. Khaaym Khani performances are often held in cafes and during cultural events in Bushehr, where locals gather to enjoy the rhythmic and expressive recitations of Khayyam's verses. These performances are not only musical but also communal, with audiences often participating by clapping and sometimes dancing to the rhythm.
Join us for a night of poetry, music, and cultural celebration. Let’s gather to enjoy the timeless verses of Khayyam, accompanied by the soulful sounds of Ney Hambon.
Special highlights of the evening include:
